Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered here

Curious about the pump track project? Find answers to the most common questions from our community, from how it works to how you can get involved.

What is a pump track?

A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns, and features designed for bikes, scooters, and skateboards. It’s a fun, safe space for all ages and skill levels to ride, learn, and connect.

Who can use the pump track?

Everyone is welcome! The track is designed for kids, teens, adults, and families—whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider. It’s a place for the whole community to enjoy.

It's so windy up there!

Yes, it definitely is. We would explore options such as planting out tall trees.

How are you going to make it safe?

It will need to be safe for riders, walkers and drivers. Some ideas are having a rope barrier around the perimeter of the roadway, improving signage, and ensuring there is adequate visibility for riders and drivers to see each other at entry and exit points.

I'm keen to get involved, what can I do?

Cool! We would be very appreciative of any help given, please just share your thoughts below and let us know how you might be able to help.

What about safety of the children around cars?

Safety is very important. We will look to design some traffic calming, as well as work with local residents and park visitors to ensure a pedestrian priority approach to the park

Who are the people behind this idea?

We're locals! We're parents of young kids who live on the hill and like to ride bikes. We've seen how good pump tracks can be for our own children in developing their biking skills, getting them out and about, and meeting other people. Check us out over on About Us.

How will the project be funded?

Funding will come from a mix of community fundraising, local grants, and potential sponsorships. We’re committed to transparency and will keep everyone updated as the project progresses.

What are the benefits for our community?

A pump track encourages outdoor activity, brings people together, and offers a safe space for play and exercise. It can boost local pride and create new opportunities for events and learning. Getting out into nature also has mental and physical benefits, especially for children in their development.

How can I share my feedback or support?

We’d love to hear from you! You can fill out our feedback formor reach out directly. Your input helps shape the project and shows community support.

What’s the timeline for the project?

We’re in the early stages, gathering feedback and support. Once we have community backing we’ll share a detailed timeline and next steps with everyone.

What about other tracks?

There are other tracks at schools, and at Stratton Street. These offer different opportunities for developing skills compared to a pump track. See Learn More for details.

Who would design and build it?

We would get proposals from a number of professional pump track designers to both design and build it. There may be opportunity during both phases for public input and mahi.

Who owns the land?

GW primarily and HCC for some of the road and parking space.

How is the space currently being used?

This space offers a car park and grass area at the moment with limited planting. We would work with the designers to incorporate the existing planting where possible.

Will any parking spaces be removed?

The intention would be not to reduce parking.
