What is a pump track?

A pump track combines the rolling jumps and turns from a BMX track, the flow of a mountain bike track and the rhythm of a skate park to create the ultimate outdoor playground suitable for everyone. Pump tracks are made up of rollers and berms which teach the basic skills of balance, carrying momentum and creation of speed by using your arms and legs to pump your bike/scooter/skateboard around the track

What about the other tracks?

There is the skills track at Stratton Street, bike tracks at schools, what's wrong with them? Nothing is wrong with them. They are different and cater to different needs is all. A pump track provides a space for different types of activity to ride or roll using the pumping motion and the flow of the track to get around.

A pump track in Oakleigh Street would be more accessible than at Stratton Street and will provide a different level of challenge (and fun) than the tracks currently provided by the schools.

Who would design and build it?

We would work with experienced pump track builders to design and build the pump track. This would be to ensure the quality to cater for all users and the longevity of the track to minimise maintenance requirements.

The mock up here is simply a mock up. We would look to build something that catered for the communities needs whilst fitting within a realistic budget.

How would it be funded?

Our goal would be to fully fund the construction of the pump track through grants, local business sponsorship, and through fundraising efforts within the community.

We would ideally be able to use the Oakleigh Street Carpark, owned by Wellington Regional Council, as the site without the need to purchase the land.

What else should go in this space?

We see the pump track, surrounded by and planted within natives, as being only the start of improving this area. These are some of our other ideas but we are keen to hear your ideas too.
